The Scary 19 Challenge was concieved by avid outdoorsman and Schoharie County resident Jason Pelton.19 peaks, all in state forest land were chosen for this challenge. Peaks that have interesting views or history were chosen. Some of the peaks are not regularly visited by hikers. Once all 19 peaks have been conquered, adventures earn the custom designed patch displayed above. If the Scary 19 Challenge is completed in winter, with the addition of a visit to the lean-to in Clapper Hollow, a secondary badge will be awarded. Some of the peaks on the Scary 19 list have designated trails, while others will need to be bushwhacked. When hiking the Scary 19, be sure to carry maps, GPS, and any other helpful safety gear.
